Shayne’s eyes on title tilt

FIGHT fan-favourite Shayne “The Pain” Singleton admits he’s desperate to taste title success.

The 21-year-old former Sandygate ABC star has opened his professional account with six comprehensive victories, and is eager to maintain that 100% record as he tops the bill at Colne Muni next Friday against Northampton’s Gavin Deacon.

Coach Karl Ince has been keen to draw in the reins on the ambitious boxer in a bid to raise his profile, before throwing him in to the Lion’s Den of a British Masters or Central Area berth.

However, Singleton is determined to get to fight number 10 unbeaten and then dream of a title chance.

“Because I’m only 21 my coach doesn’t want me to be rushing into anything,” said Shayne.

“He wants me to prepare properly before competing for a title because there’s no point in jumping in and getting beaten.

“He wants me to get through my first 10 fights first.

“I’d definitely settle for a British Masters or Central Area title.

“If you win one of those then you’ve achieved what you set out to do - become a champion.”

But the light-welterweight, ranked number 41 in Britain, has a tough task ahead of him against a former title holder.

His 28-year-old opponent scooped the Midlands Area light-welterweight title after putting a blot on Amir Unsworth’s previously unblemished record in May 2009.

However, he held the title for just six months before conceding it to Ben Lawler.

Shayne said: “Topping the bill in my home town definitely gives me that extra boost.

“I’ve been sparring with Junior Witter in Bolton which has been great preparation for me.

“He’s cleaned up in the boxing world and has been a World light-welterweight champion and has been a European, British and Commonwealth light-welterweight champion.

“I’m feeling good and fit, ready for the fight.

“I just hate waiting and counting the days.

“I want to get in there and get the job done.

“He’ll be a tough opponent but I’ll be watching videos of him to see how I need to approach the fight.

“I need to study him.”
