King George looks to slay Welsh dragons

The 15-year-old Worsthorne fighter - the English champion - is in action for his country at the Tri-Nations finals against rivals from Wales and Scotland.

The Unity College pupil, who fights at 50kg, is certainly in good nick ahead of his trip - having won all of his last 16 bouts, including eight against area champions, including Repton’s Bill Beer to win the Golden Gloves title.

Coach Brian Roche feels he has a boxer of real potential on his hands: “George is one of the best young fighers in the country at the moment, and hopefully he can add the British title.”

Roche Boxing had two fighters in action last week, at the Layton Institute in Blackpool.

Shane Smith, 16, beat Torquay’s R. Watt at 54kg on his comeback after a year and a half out of the ring.

And Billy Grogan, 12, from Kibble Bank, made it five wins out of five at 40kg with an impressive performance against Liam Southwarm of Droylsden.

Meanwhile, former Sandygate ABC fighter Shayne Singleton is looking for his eighth win from eight in the pro banks against William Warburton on Sunday at Colne Muni.

Victory could move the light middleweight closer to a Central Area title shot he craves so much.
