Fantastic away day for fearsome Sandygate duo

ONE of East Lancashire’s most active boxing clubs was out once again over the weekend as two of its young starlets attended the Jimmy Egans ABC home show at the Wythanshawe Forum, Manchester.

Sandygate’s 10-year-old Brandon ‘Burnley Terrier’ Hird opened the show against S.Humphries (Jimmy Egans ABC) in what turned out to be a very one way display of skill from the Rosehill boxer.

Straight from the opening bell Hird dominated with his long lead, doubling up his jab connecting at will. The second one-minute round saw the Sandygate boxer produce his best round scoring easily and countering every mistake. The third and final had the referee stopping proceedings a couple of times allowing Humphries a much need breather as Hird’s dominance was every present to all ringside.

Nelson-based Charlie ‘Body Snatcher’ Martin (15) squared up to home favourite D.Kinsella (Jimmy Egans ABC) in three rounds at 2minutes.

Keeping a cracking tight guard Martin kept centre ring throwing straight shots which seemed to penetrate his foe’s hands scoring well and keeping composure throughout. The second saw Martin increase his work rate switching from head to body at will and stopping Kinsella’s mobility.

The final round saw the Year 11 pupil pile on the pressure. After a volley of body shots with no return the referee had no option but to administer a standing eight count to the now beaten Kinsella. It was to no-ones’ surprise when Martin’s hand was raised aloft – the unanimous victor by the three ringside judges.

“Charlie and Brandon performed excellently away from home. We couldn’t ask for more from the two” beamed Sandygate coach Nik Tucker.
