Maggie Randall (74), of Colne, and Kathryn Smith (47), from Laneshaw Bridge, are helping to build homes and a community centre in Campo Largo, Brazil.

The duo, who are both members of The Mission church in Goitside, Nelson, flew out from Heathrow Airport, where they were joined by three other volunteers and two leaders from Mission Direct for the two-week stint.

It is the third time grandma-of-two Maggie has visited the country to help some of its poorest favela families while for Kathryn it is her first trip.

The two women held a Brazilian-themed fund-raiser at church before embarking on the journey.

Maggie, who travelled to Brazil in 2010 and 2012, said: “As far as I know we could be digging trenches for the foundations of the homes or we could be working on an orphanage. Going out there is a real eye-opener. Last time I went there I went to an orphanage and met a young lass who was 12 at the time. I asked her if she would like me to write to her and she said yes. I’ve tried to keep in touch with her and she’s 17 now so I’m hoping to see her while I’m over there.”

Anyone who wants to make a donation to the cause can do so via The Mission.
