‘Wizard of Oz’ characters attack strangers on Colne street

Two brothers who were dressed as characters from the Wizard of Oz on a charity night in Colne attacked two unsuspecting strangers without reason, Burnley Crown Court was told.

Lee Alderson and Rowan Alderson pleaded guilty to the affray in which the two much older men were injured as they walked home after going to a takeaway.

Lee Alderson (27), of Belgrave Street, Rising Bridge, near Accrington, was acknowledged to be a hard-working dad, but he was sent to prison for 10 months.

The court was told he had had a previous suspended sentence for violence.

His younger “computer geek” brother Rowan (20), of Alder Hill Street, Earby, was given eight months, suspended for 18 months and ordered to do 150 hours unpaid work.

The court was told he had a university place to read computer science and was a quiet, withdrawn individual who spent most of his time playing “World of Warcraft”.

His barrister, Mr James Heyworth, said the offence was completely out of character, but that his ambition to be a teacher had been made virtually impossible.
