Whalley man (74) is martial arts master

Terry, who teaches Japanese martial arts internationally, has just returned from teaching a large group in Prague and is now preparing to teach a course in Wroclaw, Poland.

He has practiced martial arts for 64 years and in that time he captained the UK’s first Karate team in 1963 and then spent 21 years in Japan, both studying various martial arts and working for the governing body for Karate.

In his capacity as chief of the information department of the World Union of Karate Organisations, he has travelled extensively all over the world promoting martial arts. After a lifetime of training he has reached the dizzy heights of 9th Dan in both Karate and Jujitsu and 3rd dan in both Aikido and Judo.

As a grand elder of UK Martial Arts, Terry – who also speaks and writes fluently in Japanese – says he now enjoys teaching more than ever.

He has lived in Whalley for the past three years with his wife Sharon and their two young children and says it was one of the best decisions of his life to move to the Ribble Valley.

Over the years Terry has built up a very large international network of martial arts organisations, including Jutsu International, the International Jujitsu Federation, Karate Jutsu International and Cyberbudo, often taking groups of students and instructors to Japan to tour and study at the dojos (gyms) of his Japanese friends.

In a new venture he intends to open a regular training centre in the Ribble Valley where students from many countries can come and study with him and selected instructors and stay for extended periods on a self-accommodating basis, which would cut down his travelling and let him enjoy more time at home.

He expects a good attendance at his first course in Clitheroe, beginning this Sunday, March 8th, at the St Mary’s Centre in Church Street. Spectators keen to learn more about martial arts are also welcome to attend.
