Welcome to Pendle Hill

That is thanks to Pendle’s twin town of Marl, which has just celebrated the 20th anniversary of its connection with the borough of Pendle.

The Mayor and Mayoress of Pendle, Coun. Nawaz Ahmed and his wife, Azmat, went out to the anniversary event in Germany and atten ding the official naming ceremony oif the new hill with Marl’s Mayor, Werner Arndt.

The new hill in Marl, which isn’t as high as our own Pendle Hill, has been created by downloading waste stone from a nearby coal mine there and has been planted with greenery.

It is hoped that, in years to come, when the mine closes, the hill will be open to the public.

Coun. Ahmed said: “The twinning visit marked the 20th anniversary of twinning between Pendle and Marl. As a gift to mark this important milestone, Marl have named the hill there “Pendle Hill”, which is a huge honour.

“Our 20th anniversary gift to Marl is a large canvas by Pendle artist, Philippe Handford. The canvas is an atmospheric photo of Pendle Hill with 20 candles on a metal strip which mirrors the profile of Pendle Hill. Philippe also sent over a wonderful, striking exhibition of images of Pendle.

“There was also a very thought-provoking joint World War One exhibition, with which Bob Abel, a member of the Earby and District Local History Society, was involved.
