Volunteer Margot receives her MBE

Margot (65), a retired health visitor, has been a tireless and committed volunteer at Action for Children’s Burnley Wood Children’s Centre for more than six years.

In this time, Margot has not only set up a teenage parent support and postnatal group for young mothers but she has also visited new parents at home to ensure they are coping with parenthood, offering expert support and guidance when needed.

Margot was diagnosed with terminal cancer in June 2013 but has not allowed her illness to limit the help she offers young parents in Burnley, who benefit practically and emotionally from her experience and dedication.

She said: “It felt surreal and I can’t describe how honoured I am to receive this award. I’d like to accept it on behalf of Action for Children’s Burnley Wood Children’s Centre as the true honour has been to work with all the children and families across the community.”

Action for Children’s chief executive Sir Tony Hawkhead said: “Margot is an extraordinary and remarkable woman. Her tireless efforts over an amazing six years have helped us improve the lives of countless young parents and families across Burnley.”

Terri Hacking, children’s services manager at Action for Children, attended the ceremony with Margot. She said: “It has been very special. Margot has been selfless in her work in our community. We support over 1,000 children and their families and the majority have been helped by Margot. She truly deserves to receive a national honour.”

Her Majesty The Queen is Patron of Action for Children.
