Vikings descend on Read Primary School

A SUBJECT they have been studying all term came to life for children at Read Primary School.

A Viking camp was set up outside their school in Straits Lane and pupils from Key Stage Two got a taste of what life must have been like as Viking.

A Viking re-enactment group visited the school to set up four tents, each displaying a different aspect of Viking life. One had an authentic Viking cooking pit where youngsters learned how to make butter, soup and oatcakes and in another tent they got the chance to examine Viking weapons. Animal skins, which Vikings slept on, were also displayed along with the crafts and skills they executed including braiding.

Pupils and staff got into the mood of the day, organised by teacher Mrs Joanne Elms, by dressing up as Vikings and a mock battle rounded off the day with a difference.
