Exhibitors transformed St Cuthbert’s Church Hall into a sea of colour and the growers who garden allotments on Windermere Avenue, Burnley, were delighted with the response to this year’s show.

Attendance was up on last year, with 130 visitors going along and the number of exhibitors was also up.

Popping in to see the displays were Burnley MP Gordon Birtwistle and his wife, Kathleen. The MP said: “The produce on show was fantastic. There is real competition there now. The whole event was very entertaining. It was a good afternoon and long may it continue.”

At the end of the show an auction of flowers and vegetables donated by exhibitors sent visitors home with beautiful blooms and tasty vegetables which went under the auctioneer’s hammer. This raised £69.50 for Pendleside Hospice.

The judges said the quality of the entries was very good and the children’s section in particular was “very artistic”.

The show was opened by Ward councillor Sue Graham who said: “I’m delighted to have been asked to present the show this year.

“A huge amount of work goes into the show all year round. I’ve been on to the allotment several times and seen what’s involved. It’s astonishing and hugely satisfying. Not only do people work so hard to produce flowers and vegetables, but they let the rest of us come and enjoy them too.”

The presentation of awards was followed by a raffle with the first prize a drinks hamper.

Organisers are asking for volunteers to help out on the day in next year’s show. Willing helpers should call into the official hut on the allotments off Windermere Ave and leave their details.
