VIDEO: Cuts protestor chains himself to town hall railings
A wheelchair-bound Padiham man chained himself to Burnley Town Hall in protest at Lancashire County Council cuts to services.
Brendan Morris (33) said he planned to take his protest to County Hall in Preston next after also chaining himself to under-threat Padiham Youth Centre.
He said: “I think it’s disgusting that the county council is planning to close libraries and youth centres across the area.
“These closures will affect the most vulnerable – children and elderly people, as well as those who can’t afford computers.
“I know that the county council has suffered cuts itself from the government but it should be protecting these vital services.”
The county council the council needs to make savings of £262m. on top of those agreed in previous budgets in the next five years.
It is currently in a consultation period with those centres and services at risk of closure.
A Burnley Council spokesman said: “We recognise the right to peaceful protest.
“However, unfortunately Mr Morris has got the wrong building and the wrong council. We want to be clear that the library and youth services are run by the county council, not Burnley Council, and any funding issues around them are a matter for LCC.”
