Vandals target hospice charity shop

A beer bottle was thrown through the window at the Pendleside Hospice shop in Nelson's Scotland Road. The damage was discovered at 8am this morning (Tuesday) when volunteers arrived to open the shop that trades to raise much needed cash for the hospice.

Although nothing was stolen from the premises, a few items of stock were broken. The broken glass, one of four panes in the display window, was cleared away and police are now examining CCTV footage to see of the culprit can be identified.

A spokesman for Pendleside Hospice said it would cost around £200 to repair the window and also cover the cost of calling workmen out to board it up.

She said: "Unfortunately the charity will have to stand this cost and this is money that could have gone towards the care of patients in the hospice.

"This was an act of vandalism rather than an attempt to steal anything but these people should be aware how their actions affect people."

The Nelson shop is one of eight across Burnley and Pendle that last year raised the massive total of £370,000 for the hospice.

This is all down to the dedication of the volunteers, donors and shoppers who support the shops.
