A five-vehicle collision at the Burnley junction on the M65’s westbound carriageway caused long delays and traffic tailbacks for motorists using the motorway and other routes into Burnley.

One driver was arrested by police after giving a positive breath test following the accident at junction 10 just before 8am. Two people were taken to the Royal Blackburn Hospital with what police described as neck injuries.

Vehicles used the hard shoulder to relieve the congestion while the carriageway was cleared.

Vehicles involved were: a grey Suzuki Swift, a white Fiat Doblo van, a silver Vauxhall Zafira, a green Mini One and a grey Vauxhall Corsa.

A second collision occurred at 8-30am on the westbound entry sliproad at Brierfield, junction 12. The damage was minor and the road was clear by 9-30am.

Even the shortest journeys were taking up to an hour as Gannow roundabout was congested. Traffic was at a standstill beyond the Burnley Road Spar shop from the Padiham direction and frustrated motorists were using side streets attempting to quicken their journey.
