Trial of sex case teacher collapses a second time

The trial of a former St Hilda's RC Girls School teacher accused of having sex with one of his pupils has collapsed for a second time.

Joseph Cheesbrough had denied 11 charges of indecent assault dating back to 1974 and 1975 when he was a biology teacher at the former Burnley school.

However, Judge Beverley Lunt, sitting at Burnley Crown Court, discharged the jury on Wednesday, three days into the trial.

Different jurors had previously been discharged on the second day of a Burnley Crown Court trial for legal reasons last August.

Cheesbrough, of Gable Avenue, Cockermouth, was bailed by Judge Lunt to return to Burnley Crown Court on October 20th.
