A village pub which only reopened 13 months ago has been named as the winner of the first Pendle’s Best Bar award by Leader Times readers.

The Trawden Arms, in Church Street, Trawden, was voted the best out a shortlist of five bars across the borough which appeared in this newspaper at the beginning of the month.

And owners Sharon and Martyn Whitaker were both surprised and delighted when we broke the news of their success to them on Friday.

The pub was the first either of them had run before, Sharon having been a nursery nurse and Martyn coming from an engineering background.

But they are both very pleased with the way things have gone and were preparing for a works Christmas dinner for 40 people as we spoke.

“We have concentrated on the food side of the business as we think that is the way that out of town pubs have to go these days,” Martyn said.

“But we also think the community side of the pub is important as well and we would like to thank all those who voted for us.”
