Top role for Calderstones psychiatrist

A Calderstones doctor has been offered an honorary visiting professor appointment by The University of Chester.

Dr Mark Spurrell, a widely respected consultant psychiatrist, is part of the Calderstones medical team. He specialises in rehabilitation and resettlement of individuals with learning disabilities back to the community.

Chester University has granted the three-year post, which Dr Spurrell sees as an important extension of his current academic work. The university bestows the honour on a limited number of eminent scholars and other highly respected specialists who will engage with students, undertake research or contribute to collaborative academic activities.

“I am delighted to accept this appointment,” said Dr Spurrell (55), from South Manchester. “Throughout my career I have demonstrated my commitment to lifelong learning in open and listening organisations. This is of clear benefit to service users, staff, carers, commissioners and also for students and academics.”

Mark Spurrell is part of a dedicated team of doctors at the Ribble Valley based NHS Trust, providing highly specialist support to individuals with some of the most complex and challenging of needs who are beyond the capabilities of other service providers.

The Trust’s Medical Director, Dr Fran Foster, herself a psychiatrist, said: “We’re proud to see Mark’s excellent track record recognised once again. He has a reputation for innovation and designing models of care, which this appointment will enable him to share even more widely.”

Dr Foster added: “Calderstones can once again be pleased to be an example of excellent practice in an environment where specialist learning disability services are often far from being clearly appreciated.”
