Former teen beauty queen Sasha Bennington (19) was helping passengers off the Brussels Airlines aircraft when the first bomb ripped through the departure hall killing 13 people and injuring many more.

Her shocked mum Jayne Harris told how she received a phone call “every mother dreads” from Sasha telling her about how close she had been to the atrocity.

Jayne said: “I hadn’t heard anything about the bombings until I got a call from Sasha telling me what had happened.

“It’s a phone call every mother dreads. Sasha said she was still on the plane when the first bomb went off.

“Shortly after there was a second explosion. She sounded very panicked, but they were evacuated quickly and safely.

“It doesn’t bear thinking about what might have happened if they had been there earlier. Tragedies such as this puts everything into perspective.”

Sasha and her mum, who now live in Staffordshire, have been familiar faces in Burnley for many years.

The former Shuttleworth College pupil made national headlines when she entered several teen beauty pageants, competing in America, including Miss Teen World when she was just 12.

She then turned her hand to the very different world of boxing, training at Sandygate Boxing Club in Burnley.

Jayne added: “Sasha was obviously shaken up by the whole incident but she is back working now. The last time I spoke to her she was on her way to Amsterdam.”

Terror group ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack, including one at a Brussels metro station, which ultimately claimed the lives of 34 people in the Belgian capital.
