Surgeon receives top national honour
Professor Paton, who has works as a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, received the King James IV Professorship for 2016, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to clinical practice and research.

Hide AdHis 25 years of research on screening in Developmental Dysplasia of the hip is recognised internationally, and was the subject of his PhD in 2011.
Over the last few years alone Professor Paton has conducted over a thousand surgeries, with several hundred being performed on patients at Burnley General Hospital.
Professor Paton said: “It is an unexpected privilege to be awarded this prestigious award, and this would not have been possible without the support and help of medical colleagues at the trust.”

Hide AdProfessor Paton also donates a lot of his spare time to running and, in the last three years, has run seven marathons and raised over £3,500 for musculoskeletal and children’s charities.
East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust medical director Dr Damien Riley, said: “I’m delighted that Professor Paton has been awarded the professorship from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Professor Paton is also the current North West Orthopaedic Trainees Association ‘Trainer of the Year’, and is the only surgeon to have received this award twice.
Other highlights during his 35-year medical career include his work as a visiting professor at the University of Central Lancashire and honorary senior lecturer at the University of Manchester.
