STABBING: Four arrests after Nelson street fracas

Police arested four men after a fracas broke out in a nelson street, leaving one man in hospital with a stab wound.

Police were called out to “a serious altercation” in Hendon Road around 4.50am yesterday (Sunday) after a worried resident called 999 to report the incident in which four men, all thought to be in their 20s and from Nelson, were hurt.

The stabbing victim was kept in hospital after being knifed in the stomach. His condition is said not to be life threatening but he may need surgery. The others were treated for minor wounds to the face and upper torso area.

Four men, all aged in their 20s from Nelson, have been arrested in connection with the incident for offences related to weapons and causing GBH, they remain in police custody. A knife has also been recovered.

Police secured an area in Rhoda Street, Nelson, as investigations into the incident continued yesterday.

DCI Stuart Dixon, of the Force Major Investigation Team, said: “We believe two groups of men were involved in some sort of altercation as they crossed paths shortly before 5am in Rhoda Street, Nelson. As a result four men were taken to hospital with knife wounds but fortunately their injuries are not deemed to be serious.

“We have made four arrests and specialist officers remain at the scene in Nelson as our inquiries continue. I would urge anyone with information about what happened to get in touch with us on 101 quoting log number 486 of November 1st. Any information you have could assist us with establishing exactly how this incident occurred.

“We believe that this was an isolated incident and I would like to reassure members of the local community that we are doing everything we can to find out the circumstances that led to the altercation and injuries.”
