Special service to remember our loved ones

East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust held its first memorial service for families and relatives whose loved ones were cared for by staff in the Royal Blackburn Hospital Critical Care Unit.

The non-religious service gave 60 relatives the chance to meet other families and to share and remember their loved ones who died despite the best efforts of CCU staff.

“The loss of a family member is a devastating experience for any family to have to go through,” said CCU Sister Linda Gregson, who organised the memorial service.

“We hope this service offered a peaceful way of helping people remember their loved ones and share their experiences,” she said.

Family members attending the 30-minute service heard several emotional readings, signed the “Critical Care Memorial Book of Condolence” and were presented with a single white rose as a symbol of everlasting love.

“Invitations to our inaugural memorial service went to families whose loved ones passed away on the CCU during the first six months of 2014,” added Sister Gregson.

“We plan to hold memorial services twice a year and invite families once they have been given an appropriate period of time to grieve.”
