Sex offender flouted ban on having children at his Nelson home

Jess Dean was the subject of a 10-year sex offences prevention order, imposed after he was jailed for 54 months in 2005 for molesting a boy, Burnley Crown Court was told.

Dean (55), of Napier Street, Nelson, admitted breaching the SOPO and had been committed for sentence by magistrates. His case was adjourned for sentence and he was kept in custody.

Mr Martin Hackett (prosecuting) said in December, 2005, the defendant was given a 90-month extended sentence at Preston Crown Court after he was convicted of two counts of indecent assault on a male under 14 and sexual touching. He was given a 54-month custodial term and 36 months extended licence.

Dean was released in December, 2008. Under the SOPO he was not allowed to have any children under 17 in his house.

Mr Hackett said two children had been in the premises. A supervising police officer visited on February 4th and the defendant told him the youngsters had been there. The officer found some children’s toys. Dean would say he had never been left alone with them.

The prosecutor said in 2001, the defendant had been convicted of gross indecency with a child. The 2005 offences against the boy involved Dean committing sex acts on the child.

The defendant was arrested and told police he did not realise having the children in the house in the presence of other adults put him in breach of the order.
