Serial shoplifter behind bars

The town’s magistrates heard how drug addict Tanya Jenneys (30) struck at six stores in four days, after taking methadone, heroin, crack cocaine and diazepam. She was said by her solicitor to have issues she could not deal with and would “run away and hide in drugs”.

Jenneys helped herself to a £95 jacket from JD Sports on January 14th and a Nike hooded top and tracksuit bottoms worth £63.98 from Sports Direct on January 26th. She also stole perfume to the value of £74 from Boots, a £50 fur coat from River Island, boots to the tune of £25 from Sainsbury’s and jeans worth £25 from New Look.

Jenneys was given eight weeks in prison, suspended for a year, on November 10th, after she owned up to a shoplifting spree.

The court heard on that occasion how the defendant stole lighting worth £179.97 from The Range in Burnley and went and loaded it into her car before going back in for another £89.99 haul. She had also targeted New Look in Burnley on October 5th, when she took £120 of clothing and JD Sports in Blackburn, on November 3rd, where she stole two jackets worth £300.

During her latest court appearance, Jenneys, of Thirlmere Avenue, Burnley, admitted two charges of theft and asked for four offences, committed on January 23rd, 24th and 26th, to be considered. The Bench revoked two community orders.

Mark Williams (defending) said the offences were a culmination of her drugs issues and other problems, which had got the better of her. He said: “In her own words, the drug addiction is getting completely out of hand. The benefit, if there can be one, of going into custody is that it will stabilise her and enable her to get off the street drugs.”
