Search for young people who make a difference

YOUNG people who make a difference to their community are being sought to take part in the annual High Sheriff of Lancashire’s Young Citizen of the Year Awards.

The awards search for a young person, aged up to 21, who has helped their local neighbourhood, an individual, family member or local organisation.

This year, High Sheriff Peter Mileham wants to hear about all kinds of projects undertaken by young people; projects that help make communities safer and better places to live; those which help regenerate deprived areas; or those which help people build confidence and unlock their potential.

BAE Systems are again sponsor for this year’s awards. Site director Ian Wood said: “It is refreshing to come across a scheme that recognises and celebrates young people’s achievements and acknowledges the contribution they make to the communities in which they live. Young people are often portrayed in a negative light but the fact is, troublemakers are in the minority – they are far, far outweighed by the thousands of youngsters who make a valuable contribution to their communities day in, day out.

“It is on that basis we are tremendously proud to support these awards and extremely keen to encourage people to put nominations forward.”

The scheme is being administered by Lancashire Partnership Against Crime on behalf of the High Sheriff and the closing date for nominations is January 31st.

All finalists will be invited to a presentation at Lancashire Constabulary headquarters in the spring when the winner will receive £250 plus a trophy and certificate from Lancashire’s High Sheriff and Chief Constable. Two runners-up will also receive £100 and a certificate.
