Scientist Heather is in Burnley school ‘hall of fame’

Heather Doran, who attended Ivy Bank, now Hameldon Community College, between 1997 and 2002, is a molecular biology scientist and is currently studying for a Phd in medical science at the University of Aberdeen.

During her time at Ivy Bank, Heather was involved with the school radio station and also developed her passion for science.

She then went on to Clitheroe Royal Grammar School to study A-levels in biology, chemistry and English before progressing to Durham University to study molecular biology and biochemistry.

After graduating Heather moved to London to work at Procter and Gamble where she worked on the development of new toothpastes but, after a year, decided to study for a PhD in medical sciences in Aberdeen.

She has also spent time at the University of Indiana in the USA and recently launched Au, a science magazine showcasing the best science and science journalism from the University of Aberdeen.

Miss Gill Broom, headteacher at Hameldon, said: “Heather’s level and diversity of accomplishments serve as a testament that a education from Hameldon Community College provides the foundation for the many wonderful opportunities that await our students.

“The recognition that Heather has gained brings pride to Hameldon Community College and inspires fellow alumni and students alike and we will be inviting Heather, our very first inductee, to unveil our Hall of Fame in the very near future.”
