Royal role for Christiana

Mrs Christiana Buchanan who has been appointed as Lancashire Deputy Lieutenant.

The Lord-Lieutenant of Lancashire, Lord Shuttleworth, was delighted to announce eight new Deputy Lieutenants across the county. It also includes Terence Hephrun, who has retired recently as chief officer of Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale Council of Voluntary Service.

Mrs Buchanan was born in Derbyshire but has lived here in Pendle since 1980. She was a solicitor before moving here but was then appointed into the prosecution service. She has recently retired as Senior Crown Prosecutor – but remains a director of Marsden Building Society.

Her husband, Judge Andrew Buchanan, was a solicitor before becoming a judge and is still carrying on his key role.

The new Deputy Lieutenants are accepted by the Queen thanks to Lord Shuttleworth’s selecting them. And there is a chance she and others will meet the Royal Family.

Mrs Buchanan said: “I’m absolutely pleased and honoured to get this new role. I am looking forward to lots of activities.

“I am a keen Royalist fan. Me and my husband have been twice to Royal Jubilees in London - just part of the crowd there. I’m looking forward to doing activities asked of me. Lord Shuttleworth will get me to do things.”

The new Deputies will join the existing ones, and that includes Pendle’s Dennis Mendoros, who is chief of aircraft firm Euravia Engineering at Kelbrook. In 2010, he was appointed High Sheriff of Lancashire.

The county’s other new Deputies are Mohamed Faruk Desai, Preston; Suzana Edwards, Ribchester; Charles Hadcock, Bleasdale near Garstang; Carl Hankinson, Longridge; Dr James Barry Johnson, Bilsborrow near Preston; and David Taylor, Preston.

The Office of Lord-Lieutenant is military in origin and dates back to the days of Henry Vlll! The function of the Deputies is to assist the Lord-Lieutenant in carrying out his public duties.
