River Calder flood alert: protect yourself plea

A Flood Alert has been issued by the Environment Agency for the River Calder this evening (Friday).

Flooding is possible for Rivers Calder, Brun, Don and Pendlewater, from Laneshaw Bridge to the river Ribble including Trawden, Burnley, Nelson, Colne, Accrington and Whalley.

Officials have warned that low lying land and roads will be affected first and have urged locals to be ready to “protect yourself, family, pets and property”.

“Persistent rainfall is causing river levels to rise,” states theflood alert. “Rainfall will continue through this evening into Saturday morning so river levels may rise further

Residents are urged to:

Prepare a flood kit including a torch, batteries, mobile phone, warm clothes, water, food and any prescription medicines you may need.

Avoid walking, cycling or driving through flood water.
