Residents object to new takeaway plan

Local shop owner Mr Bhag Singh has applied again to Burnley Borough Council to convert the former Post Office in Padiham Road to a hot food takeaway.

Councillors refused his first application in December, but Mr Singh has re-applied with reduced opening hours.

But neighbours living near the former post Office have vowed to object again to the application.

Around 20 residents attended a meeting in the Tim Bobbin to discuss the latest application.

Mrs Madeleine McGrail, who lives nearby, said: “We are worried about the effect that a takeaway could have in attracting anti-social behaviour.

“We feel if this is granted that many more takeaways will then open on this road, which has happened in other parts of Burnley.

“Although Mr Singh has re-applied with reduced opening hours, we feel he will apply in the near future to extend these.

“This is a largely residential area and we feel this would have a detrimental impact on our homes.

“There is also the issue of healthy eating with regards to our children. There are a number of schools in the vicinity and we are worried about the impact of them being attracted to fast food.”

Burnley Council’s Development Control Committee will here representations from both sides and make a decision on March 23rd at Burnley Town Hall.
