Remi Harris Hot Club Trio to return to Barnoldswick later this year

The Remi Harris Hot Club Trio is set to return to Barnoldswick’s Music & Arts Centre later this year for an evening that promises to deliver far more than Gypsy Swing nostalgia.

The trio, directly modeled after the string-dominated line-up popularised by Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli, who founded the Quintette du Hot Club de France, will perform on Wednesday, December 2nd, promising an evening that transcends the genre of jazz.

Harris is an artist whose influences range from the lyricism of Peter Green, the thunderous sonics of Led Zeppelin, the individuality of Jimi Hendrix, Wes Montgomery’s smoky elegance and the harmonic sophistication of Joe Pass. The result is an artist whose influences stretch comfortably from the cafés of pre-war Paris to Chicago blues clubs, from bebop to British blues-rock, without ever sounding fragmented or contrived.

After starting out as a busker, Harris has enjoyed a remarkable career. He’s performed at iconic venues and festivals such as at Buckingham Palace, the Montreal International Jazz Festival, the revered Festival Django Reinhardt at Samois-sur-Seine, Oslo's Django Festival, Melbourne's celebrated Bennetts Lane Jazz Club and the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall alongside Jamie Cullum, earning plaudits for his style of improvised jazz and his skills as a guitarist.

At the Music & Arts Centre, Harris will be accompanied by Tom Moore, who provides the trio’s warm, resonant heartbeat on double bass, and Chris Nesbitt, who delivers the propulsive la pompe rhythm guitar that became the signature pulse of Reinhardt's original ensemble. As a three-piece, they recreate the conversational intimacy that made the original Quintette du Hot Club de France so revolutionary, but maintain an approach that allows them to serve as modern improvisers rather than operating as historical re-enactors.

What began in the cafés and dance halls of Paris during the 1930s has evolved into a living, ever-changing tradition, continually renewed by players such as Harris, who are willing to honour Reinhardt and Grappelli’s legacy, but provide a modern twist on the guitar and aim to expand the future of European jazz.

For devotees of Django Reinhardt or those drawn to masterful musicianship, the return of the Remi Harris Hot Club Trio promises to be an evening celebrating jazz’s richest traditions. Tickets are available at https://www.barnoldswickmusicandartscentre.com/remi-harris-hot-club-trio
