Primary school pupils perform ‘above national average’

Provisional figures released by Lancashire County Council show that 75% of 11-year-olds in the county gained the national standard of level 4 or above in both English and maths in the end of Key Stage 2 tests.

The 2011 results show an increase of more than 1% since 2009, which was the last time all the primary schools in Lancashire undertook national tests. Nationally 74% of children reached the required standard.

Results in the English and maths tests also improved with 82% gaining level 4 or above in English and in maths – better than the national averages of 81% and 80% respectively.

County Coun. Susie Charles, Cabinet member for children and schools, said: “The Key Stage 2 results for Lancashire are excellent news.

“I am delighted to see that three-quarters of our children are gaining level 4 or above in English and mathematics before they leave primary school, which is better than the national average.

“It is also an improvement on the Lancashire results of 2009, our most recent comparable result.

“A good foundation in English and mathematics is vitally important, as these subjects form the basic grounding for future education, and, of course, coping with everyday life. I am very proud of our Year 6 children and the teachers and parents who have helped them to achieve these results.”

More specific figures, broken down by towns, will be published later in the year.
