Burnley Council's top earner picks up £120,000 a year

Burnley Council has two staff members earning a remuneration package in excess of £100,000 a year according to a 'Town Hall Rich List' published today by the Taxpayers' Alliance.

That puts Burnley well down the table of £100,000-plus earning employees both regionally and nationally.

That equates to around the same figure paid to four nurses according to the 14th annual Alliance report.

The second highest earner is the chief operating officer whose basic salary of £88,541 is topped up by £3,769 'others' and a pension contribution of £13,600 to give a total package of £105,910.

Burnley Council ranks 28th in the North-West and 294th nationally in the £100,000-plus pay table.

The average number of employees who received over £100,000 in total remuneration per local authority is seven. The average number receiving over £150,000 is 1.7 employees per council.

At least 2,802 people employed by local authorities in 2019-20 received more than £100,000 in total remuneration, an increase of 135 on 2018-19. 693 received over £150,000, 26 more than the previous year.

Regionally, Cheshire West and Chester topped the chart with 19 employees earning in excess of £100,000.

Nationally, the council with the highest number of £100,000-plus employees was Essex county council with 40 employees, five more than the previous year.

Glasgow had the highest number of employees receiving over £150,000 at 14, two more than the previous year.

A total of 31 local authority employees received remuneration in excess of a quarter of a million pounds in 2019-20. This was one fewer than the previous year.
