Police charity cycle ride for BK's Heroes
PC Carl Nevison, PCSOs Mark Hyde and Neil Wallin and police staff member Paula Cullen are cycling from Whitehaven to Sunderland raising money for BK’s Heroes, the charity set up by the late Ben King (27) from Reedley.
Ben died earlier this year after battling brain tumours and kidney failure and his parents Dave and Fiona, both retired police officers, are carrying on his fund-raising work.
The four bobbies are tackling the 135-mile coast to coast challenge in two days and leave Whitehaven on Sunday, August 21st for the first leg of 75 miles and an overnight stop in Alston.
Then on day two, they will complete the remaining 60 miles to Sunderland.
Mark Hyde said: “The team members are using their own annual leave and rest days to complete the ride and all team members have been training hard for the last six months to be able to complete the challenge.
“We have been getting together whenever we can but it has been difficult due to the shift pattern we all work so we have been training alone as well.
“It has been good fun and as well as raising money for a great cause, it has been good for personal fitness.
“Although 135 miles is not a great distance for regular cyclists, for some of our middle aged, slightly overweight members it will be a real challenge.
“I think we are all excited about it but a little bit apprehensive.
“We know Fiona and Dave very well and I worked with Fiona in Barnoldswick.
“I knew Ben from an early age and the kidney problems he had.
“He really was an inspirational person right up until the time of his death.
“I think it is fantastic what he did.
“The police sports and social club has a minibus which they have kindly allowed us the use of free of charge and Dave and Fiona are going to drive across with us as support, to carry water bottles, spare inner tubes and the like.
“Thank you to Richard at the Green Jersey in Clitheroe who has supplied lime green jerseys, the charity’s colour, and to Lee Roberts from Itus Security who has funded them.”
