The RSPCA have issued advice to pet owners during fireworks season and warned that fireworks and bonfires can be a source of fear for many animals.

The charity has issued a checklist for animal owners ahead of this Thursday’s Guy Faukes night celebrations. The adviced includes specialist guidelines for dogs, cats, and also small animals such as rabbits and guinea pigs.

Advice for Dogs

Before fireworks begin, move your dog to the play area with some of their favourite toys

Ignore the fireworks yourself and see if your dog wants to play with you

If your dog has a dog friend who isn’t scared of fireworks, keep them together

Advice for Cats

Make sure your cat has somewhere to hide if they want to, for example, under some furniture or in a quiet corner.

Don’t try to tempt your cat out as this may cause them to become more stressed.

Advice for small animals

If your pets live outside, partly cover cages, pens and aviaries with blankets so that one area is well sound-proofed. MAke sure your pet can still look out.

Provide lots of extra bedding so your pet has something to burrow in.
