Around 50 Cub Scouts across Burnley took part in their first ever 'virtual friendship camp' at the weekend.

A joint venture between St Stephens, St Matthews with Holy Trinity and Worsthorne Cub Scouts the children had to cancel their original plans for their annual camp trip to Waddecar Scout Activity Centre near Preston due to the pandemic.

So they improvised and set up 'camp' in their gardens or indoor dens with some sleeping on trampolines and hammocks, keeping in touch through Zoom meetings and facebook live sessions.

The campers had a 'virtual' campfire sing a long with the world famous song 'Ging Gang Gooli' at the top of their list.

There was also a live cooking session and the challenge to drop an egg without breaking it proved to be very popular with one cub managing to drop one from three stories high without it cracking!

The youngsters were also invited to design a poster about camp and scouting since lockdown.

St Stephen's Cub Scout leader and group scout leader Phil Riley organised the camp out with Alan Fielding who is Cub Scout leader at St Matthew's and Marie Townend who is Cub Scout leader at Worsthorne.

Phil said: "It was great to see so many young people taking part, and more importantly, whole families getting involved and joining in.

"Instead of watching TV parents were outside having fun and toasting marshmallows."

Phil added that while face to face scouting was not permitted it was still very much taking place in virtual mode with children completing badges at home and sending in pictures of their achievements.
