Video: Shoppers react to Burnley town centre 'reopening'

Shoppers, including a former MP of the town, have been sharing their thoughts on the "first proper day" of shopping in Burnley town centre since the coronavirus lockdown began in March.

The Burnley Express headed to Burnley town centre and the Charterwalk Shopping Centre to gauge the views of shoppers taking advantage of the first chance in weeks to buy "non essential" items.

And there were plenty of orderly queues at several stores in the town including budget fashion retailer Primark, as well as Marks and Spencer, and several banks.

Former Burnley Liberal Democrat MP Gordon Birtwistle stopped to speak to the Burnley Express and said he was delighted things were slowly returning to normal.

Despite being a politician, he said, the Burnley councillor added that he would be taking the advice of the scientists and not other politicians in observing social distancing measures, a number of which introduced around the town centre.
