Struggling Ribble Valley families urged to come forward for children's toys this Christmas

The plea has been issued by Capt Elizabeth Smith, who is co-ordinating Ribble Valley's 17th annual toy appeal to help families and children who might otherwise go without this Christmas.

The financial impact of Covid-19 has caused an unprecedented challenge for thousands of the most vulnerable low income families and individuals. Thousands of people have lost their jobs due to their workplace closing and have been particularly hard hit just before Christmas.

Capt Smith, of the Clitheroe Salvation Army, said: "The toys are coming in amazingly well, considering the Covid restrictions. People have been exceptionally generous this year and we have had some beautiful toys. Thank you to everyone who has given, in cash and in kind. Thank you also to our volunteers who have given their time to help. We could not do what we do without the generosity of the community. It is touching to see how people care for those less fortunate and are eager to bring joy to children and relief to parents at Christmas. God bless you all for your kind hearts.

"There is only a few weeks left to Christmas and we want to reach out to struggling families and agencies to let them know we can provide brand new toys for your children this Christmas. Please get in touch with us as we can take the pressure off. Referrals from agencies have to be submitted by this Sunday (December 13th). We do not need childrens' names - we only need ages and genders, with a name and mobile phone number for contacting regarding deliveries. Please state if a child has extra needs.

"We want to do our best to prevent children from low income families having a miserable Christmas, so we will do our very best to meet the extra needs with the help of our generous and caring community."

She added: "Due to Covid-19 restrictions, I’m sorry to say we are not able to arrange a hot meal in our building on Christmas Day. Instead, we will be delivering food, goodies and treats to lonely people on Christmas morning.

"For people wishing to donate toys, they can be dropped off at The Salvation Army, 31/31A, Lowergate, Clitheroe (The old Job Centre) Monday to Friday between 10am to 12-30pm. "Please note we only take NEW toys."
