Seek out Higham's virtual treasure hunt in support of historic church

Villagers in Higham have come up with a new way to raise funds for the local church after COVID-19 cancelled three of its popular family events.

It’s a virtual treasure hunt for a chest containing over £1,000 that has been buried somewhere in Higham.

Organisers hope the online event will go some of the way to make up for losing the village’s well-liked Christmas Fair, May Fair and Scarecrow Festival.

Hundreds of visitors from across Lancashire are attracted to the Pendleside village each year for its festivities but sadly, as with many other events planned for 2020, they had to be called off, which came as a disappointment to organisers.

Terry Butterfield, chairman of the Higham Events Committee, said: “These are fabulous events and everyone enjoys mucking in to make them a success. Year after year they just keep getting better as word spreads further afield and folk keep coming back to enjoy the village.

"It’s so sad how COVID-19 has badly affected so many families and changed people’s plans.”

The main benefactor of these attractions - which have been running in Higham for some 40 years - is the village church, St John the Evangelist. The 146 year old building stands as a focal point in the centre of Higham.

Unfortunately, this year the church has missed out on the vital funds the events would have raised.

Mr Butterfield added: “Naturally, this awful pandemic put paid to our plans but we had a good think about what we could do to bring a bit of fun and help our local church. We needed to do something which would raise money, allow people to stay at home but feel part of something without compromising their health.

“If you are able to support us, please donate £10. You could win £1,000 or a runners up prize of £100 or £50. Good luck everyone and fingers crossed we’ll be back bigger and better with our usual events as soon as it’s safe”.
