The Armed Forces Day flag is raised from the Clitheroe Castle keep every June to show support for British servicemen and women. However, due to social distancing requirements, the flag could not be flown from the keep this year. So, Ribble Valley Mayor Stella Brunskill, rallied to the cause and raised the flag on her own outside the Ribble Valley Civic Suite.

Around the country local authorities, town and parish councils and communities large and small have held scaled-down or virtual events to mark Armed Forces Day.

Coun. Stella Brunskill said: “The respect and appreciation shown on Armed Forces Day by people up and down the country goes a long way in sustaining the high morale of the armed forces. Although we cannot raise the flag ceremonially from the Clitheroe Castle keep, due to social distancing requirements, I am delighted and honoured to raise it from outside the Ribble Valley Civic Suite.”

Since 2009, Armed Forces Day has been marked on June 27th every year with events large and small throughout the UK. Due to the pandemic, this year’s events have been scaled down or will take place online.
