However, there will be a change to the arrangements on Sunday organised by Clitheroe Town Council.

A short Service of Remembrance will be held at the war memorial for invited guests only at 10-45am. The Mayor of Clitheroe and invited guests will lay wreaths at the war memorial on behalf of the town and other organisations.

To promote public safety as much as possible whilst being able to honour the fallen in a respectful way, members of the public are requested not to attend the war memorial area under any circumstances before noon on Sunday.

A spokesman for Clitheroe Town Council explained: "HM Government guidance for Tier 3 locations for Remembrance Sunday advises that event organisers should keep numbers to a minimum and it was felt that the original arrangements involving 50-60 wreath layers would not satisfy this criterion.

"Given rising numbers of coronavirus cases in the Ribble Valley and an increase in the severity of regulations imposed on Lancashire, it was decided that a more restricted event would therefore be more appropriate.

"If you wish to lay a wreath as part of a community group or as an individual, please do so after 12 noon in line with social distancing guidelines. No more than six people to gather at the war memorial at any one time. If there are people already at the war memorial when you arrive, please wait safely at a distance until they have finished their act of remembrance.

"The service at the war memorial will be live streamed onto the Town Council Facebook page. The community is invited to join together on the doorstep at 11am for collective remembrance from home. This is similar to the NHS, VE 75 Day and VJ Day events from earlier in the year.

"Thank you for your patience and understanding and we hope you can join us in commemorating on Remembrance Sunday."
