Record-breaking gifts for almost 500 deprived Ribble Valley youngsters as the community pulls together to help those in need

There were plenty of smiles on Christmas Day thanks to the generosity of the local community and businesses who donated hundreds of brand-new toys, gifts and food to under-privileged families.

And in a year that has been tough for so many people, local food establishments joined forces to create a magical Christmas for struggling families by providing a special festive buffet.

As reported previously, The Clitheroe Advertiser and Times and the Ribble Valley branch of the Salvation Army teamed up in November last year to launch their annual appeal to help families and children who might otherwise go without at Christmas. In total, 440 children received brand-new toys on Christmas Day.

Appeal co-ordinator, Capt Elizabeth Smith, of the Clitheroe Salvation Army, thanked each and every person who donated. She said: "The Toy Appeal catered for 440 children across the Ribble Valley - an increase of 20 children on last year's figures.

"We say a huge thank you to everyone who gave toys. To those who used our Amazon Wish list, which was a huge success, and to those who delivered toys to our building, thank you for your kindness and generosity. You made Christmas so much better, for children, and for parents who were relieved to have some help in securing a happy Christmas for their families,

"We have received many messages saying how much the toys were appreciated, and what a relief it was to see the delight on their children’s faces as they unwrapped their gifts. Thank you so much for your help .I truly don’t know what I would have done without your help. It is so overwhelming."

She added: "2020 has probably been our busiest Christmas ever, due to having to work around Covid-19 restrictions, completing risk assessments, and keeping people safe. We were not able to provide a Christmas Day meal and party, but we were determined to provide some kind of doorstep delivery to those who would have come to us, rather than be on their own on Christmas Day. We were not sure how we would do it, but again our community came to the rescue. The Buck Inn, Paythorne, provided 40 individual three course Christmas lunches complete with all the trimmings – including crackers – for people. These were delivered on Christmas Eve by our awesome team of volunteers. Thanks also go to the customers who contributed to the meals.

"In addition, The Parkers Arms at Newton-in-Bowland provided 30 individually plated buffet teas, which were delivered on Christmas morning. Wiiliam Pye Ltd, Longridge, added 30 goodie bags, each individually prepared, with goodies and personal gifts which found their way to delighted recipients on Christmas morning.

"Thank you all so much for the part you played in bringing joy to people across the generational span, who felt cared for rather than alone at Christmas.

"The community spirit in Clitheroe and the Ribble Valley is something to be proud of and to treasure. God bless everyone who contributed to the happiness of others in any way, large or small, this Christmas. You are truly wonderful."
