Popular Burnley village 'lollipop man' (82) who beat Covid-19 thanks community for 'overwhelming' support

"I have been so overwhelmed by the kindness and help I have received from so many wonderful people in the village, who have always made me welcome," said Peter Griffiths, who is 82 and now back at his home in Worsthorne recovering from the virus which he admits has absolutely floored him.

"It was a terrible experience," said Peter."I spent 10 days in intensive care in an oxygen hood and there were times when I did wonder if I would make it out alive because I felt that poorly."

Clarets fan Peter added: "Being in such a dark place makes you really appreciate where your happy place is in life."

A school crossing patrol at Worsthorne Primary School for the past 15 years, Peter was rushed straight to ICU at the Royal Blackburn Hospital by ambulance after he became poorly and tested positive for coronavirus the day after Boxing Day.

Brave Peter battled the virus with all the strength he had in him and once he was well enough he was then transferred to the Pendle Community Hospital for rehabilitation. He was finally allowed home on February 9th.

Neighbours and friends in Worsthorne,where he has lived for over 30 years, rallied to help Peter with regular socially distanced visits and deliveries of meals, food, treats and essential items.

Peter said: "There are so many people I want to thank for being there for me including the good friends who are never more than just a phone call away for me."

And he was thrilled when pupils turned up on the doorstep with hand-made 'get well' cards and a £60 voucher from the staff for the Village Store so Peter can stock up on everything he needs.

Peter said: "It was so lovely to see their faces and I am looking forward to getting back to doing the job I love.

"I know it 's going to take me a long time as some days I feek ok and others days I am worn out.

Originally from Bacup Peter lived all his life with his sister Kathleen until her death three years ago.

Describing Peter as a 'real gentleman,' friend and Worsthorne resident Janis Chisnall said: "He is our one and only lollipop man who is everyone's friend and the children love him.

"Peter is ever so friendly and loves a chat, even if if he does tell the worst jokes."
