One of Burnley's most iconic buildings will re-open its doors this weekend as a wine bar, functions and music venue.

The old central Post Office in Hargreaves Street, which has been re-named Penny Black, will open its doors on Saturday.

The venue will be run by Yasmin Nawaz, who has several years experience in the licensed trade working at Remedy nightspot in the town. She will be joined by her sister, experienced chef Natalie Nawaz who ran her own successful eaterie, The Olive Pot in Burnley town centre.

The grade two listed Edwardian building underwent a £770k. renovation in 2018 to transform it into Carnivoro, a Brazilian restaurant, which closed its doors last year.

Lockdown has hit the hospitality industry hard so the announcement that the magnficent building would re-open is a shot in the arm for Burnley.

The public responded in their droves to an appeal for suggestions for names for the new venue with several coming up with the name Penny Black to reflect the building's heritage. The Penny Black was the world's first adhesive postage stamp used in the public postal system.

Yasmin said: "We would like to thank those who came up with some great suggestions for a new name and also for the many encouraging and supportive comments.

"We are really excited to create a new venue that will bring people into town, both during the day and in the evening."
