Steven Lancaster, co-founder and executive director of The Grand, stressed the popular York Street venue is not closing, but the"heartbreaking" decision has been taken to secure the future of the community-based arts facility.

He explained: "The coronavirus pandemic has caused a devastating impact to The Grand and like many other arts organisations within our sector, we are experiencing difficult times.

"Government lockdown restrictions forced the temporary closure of The Grand back in March. Despite support from the furlough coronavirus job retention scheme, with the uncertainty and conditions placed on the future of large public indoor gatherings and performances, it remains very unclear as to when we can safely reopen the venue.

"It is therefore with deep sadness we are forced into the position of considering a number of redundancies in order to protect the future of this charitable organisation. We are facing incredibly difficult decisions more so with such a fantastic team of staff. Together with a number of incredible providers, partners and volunteers."

He added: "Our hope remains that with these necessary steps, plus the end to social distancing and a potential vaccine for COVID-19, that one day we will return to the vibrant, inspirational and flourishing heart in our community again!"
