Green energy scheme for Burnley homes available worth £10k per house

The Green Homes grant scheme is available to owners-occupiers, private tenants and social tenants, although a contribution from a landlord will be required for all rented properties.

The grant is available via Cosy Homes in Lancashire (CHiL), the affordable warmth initiative established by the 15 local authorities in Lancashire, including Burnley Council, with the aim of reducing fuel poverty across the county.

CHiL can help residents access the Green Homes scheme which covers the cost of installing energy saving measures, such as solid wall insulation and renewable heating technologies, to make your home warmer now and in the future, and CHiL will pick up the bill for the energy-efficiency work carried out.

Although this particular funding does not cover gas central heating, the council would still encourage people to contact CHiL as there may be other funding options available for this type of heating.

Coun. John Harbour, Burnley Council’s executive member for housing, said: “This new grant will help local people make their homes warmer and more energy efficient, which will help cut their heating bills.

“We’re really encouraging all residents who are struggling to heat their homes in winter to get in touch and find out if they’re eligible. It takes minutes and costs them nothing.”

Properties eligible for the grant are those with an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of D,E,F or G. If the property meets the criteria then the household must also be eligible to access the grant.

Eligible households will have a combined income of no more than £30,000, with savings of less than £16,000. Anyone in receipt of benefits is likely to qualify.

The council is working with Calico to ensure its social rented properties are included in the scheme.

Coun. Harbour added: “The scheme closes in December so I’m urging people to find out if they’re eligible. Don’t put it off because you may forget and miss the chance to get this grant.”
