Firefighters extinguish Whalley grass blaze
Fire crews spent yesterday afternoon (Sunday) tackling a grass and fence blaze near Whalley Abbey.
Thanks to the quick-thinking actions of Whalley councillor Mark Hindle, who immediately rang the emergency services when he spotted the fire from his lounge window, crews were on the scene in minutes and stopped the fire from getting out of control.
Coun. Hindle said: "Firefighters battled for hours to tackle the blaze, They said it was deep in the peaty soil and therefore would take a while to extinguish. Without it being reported, it could have spread fast and caused a lot of damage."
