With people having to queue to get into supermarkets, more and more people in Clitheroe, especially NHS staff and key workers, are relying on Stansfields for their lunchtime essentials.

The popular business in Castle Street, ran by Anya Amos and her dad Richard Morgan, has become incredibly important in ensuring people have access to pasties, pies, fresh bread, eggs, bacon, other cooked meats and a selection of cakes between 8am and 12pm Tuesday to Saturday. While in the afternoons, the duo are providing a crucial doorstep delivery service for the elderly and vulnerable.

Speaking to the Clitheroe Advertiser, Richard said: "On Tuesday last week we had a tough day when we sent our marvellous team home and decided what, if anything we were going to do at Stansfields during this crisis. We agreed to change the shape of our business to meet the challenge of COVID-19 by selling only staple foods from those of our suppliers that have remained open. Our intention is simple, to provide a small part of the food supply chain to our customers during this crisis. We chose to open for four hours (8-12am) to build awareness and increase the take up of our offer of free, safe, doorstep delivery every afternoon, which we believe will become increasingly important to our elderly and vulnerable customers as we progress. We are not expecting to make money, just do our bit to safely get fresh food to those that need it and extend the length of time we can survive as a business by slowing down the level of loss each week. Anya and I genuinely think that’s the 'right thing to do' and our staff have been hugely supportive."

He added: "We think maintaining a trade in sandwiches is not the right thing to do, it was okay two weeks ago, but things have changed. We’ve had lots of our customers asking for coffee and sandwiches and I understand that we are all adjusting to the new norm, it will take time, our world is changing so quickly and there’s absolutely no criticism of anybody who’s looking for a decent butty, we love you, and will be falling over you in a few weeks. But this is a real threat that we’re all facing, particularly for our older customers and we should not be shopping in town for bacon, sandwiches or coffee, it’s just not essential. We are continuing to sell bread, eggs, bacon, pies, pasties vaccuum-packed sausages while ensuring all the health and safety rules in the shop and only allowing one person in the shop at a time."
