And Daniel Tempest has raised the grand total of just over £2,000 before he has even taken one step towards the challenge to walk the Burnley Way.

"I have been overwhelmed by the messages of support and donations from family, friends and even former colleagues who I have worked with," said Daniel who is doing the walk to raise money for Pendleside Hospice. "A lot of people who have donated have said the hospice is a cause very close to their hearts.

And this is so true for Daniel himself as in August he lost his grandma, Theresa Tempest, to cancer at the age of 77. And she was cared for at the hospice in the final days of her life.

Daniel (37) said: " Despite restrictions meaning that I, personally, could not see my grandma and say goodbye, the hospice staff were flexible with the rules to accommodate visits by all of her six children, which was a great comfort for them, particularly my mother."

Theresa doted on her several grandchildren and great grandchildren, who she loved spending time with.

A former employee of Bellings, Elgin and Lucas Engineering in the 60s, Theresa took voluntary redundancy at the age of 50 and became a care worker for the elderly. She also worked in the kitchens at the former St Theodore's RC High and Towneley High schools in Burnley.

She also loved reading socialising and walking her dog Buddy.

Daniel added: "The hospice exists to promote and enhance quality of life for people with life-limiting illnesses, their families and carers by delivering specialist and holistic palliative care, free of charge.

"So I wanted to do something to raise a bit of money so they can carry on providing this valuable service for others."

Quantity surveyor Daniel, who lives with his partner Kate and stepdaughter Poppy (22), is waiting for the weather to improve before he tackles the walk which follows a route through fields, parks, old farms and Forest of Burnley woodlands to the wild South Pennine high moorland routes where the weather and terrain can be rough, even in the summer.

Daniel added: "The landscape, history and wildlife are all varied and fascinating. The route passes relatively close to my home, so I will be tailoring it slightly."

And Daniel admits it will be something of a physical challenge for him as it's the furthest distance he has ever walked, although he has previously conquered the Yorkshire Three Peaks which is 26 miles.

But Daniel won't be alone for his cousin, Burnley dad of two Kevin 'Zigi 'Smith has volunteered to join him on the trek.

Daniel, who attended the former St Theodore's RC High School, added: "We are thinking to do the walk towards Easter, possibly Good Friday, but it depends on the weather and covid restrictions."
