The 13-year-old suffered devastating injuries to his eye when he was hit in the face with a firework two years ago at an organised display held at Rosegrove Railway Club in Burnley. Since then he has undergone numerous operations to try and save his sight and he also takes regular eye drops.

"We are just waiting around for news."

Nicola added that several families in the same situation, including some with small children, were running out of money.

She added: "It's crazy ,they can't expect families with young children to manage on two meals a day."

Up to 14,000 holidaymakers have been affected by the storm but the Canary goverment confirmed that all passengers unable to fly home have been put up overnight in hotels.

Visibility across the islands were severely impacted by the sandstorm, which carried red dust from the Sahara desert.

Flights from Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma and North Tenerife are beginning to resume, but those departing South Tenerife continue to be grounded.
