Burnley FC: Turf Moor anti-terrorism measures to be replaced

The new bollards outside Turf Moor will protect matchday fans from potential incidents.

The move was revealed to Burnley’s Full Council meeting last week by its economy and growth boss Coun. Mark Townsend.

The works are part of the £6.1 million Town2Turf project to improve pedestrian links between the stadium area and Burnley town centre.

The scheme which started on January 16 and is set to be completed in summer 2024 forms part of wider plans to create a “regeneration corridor” from one side of the town centre to the other, from the Weavers’ Triangle through to Turf Moor.

Coun. Townsend told the council meeting: “Some preparation works including tree removal and installation of anti-terrorism measures to Turf Moor have been undertaken.

“Tidying-up of the canal embankment has commenced.

“A site compound has been established on Centenary Way car park ready for the main construction works due to start at the end of January.

“The first phase of works will be on Harry Potts Way.”

A Burnley Council spokesperson said: “Measures are being included in the Town2Turf scheme to help ensure the safety of members of the public on match days.

“Hydraulic bollards will be installed in the carriageway at both ends of Harry Potts Way.

“They will normally be flush to the road surface and only raised on match days when Harry Potts Way is closed to vehicular traffic.

“Permanent bollards will be installed in the footways at the same points and will be designed to provide enough space for wheelchairs users and people with pushchairs etcetera to get through.

“These measures will replace the temporary arrangements currently used and are similar to ones used in towns and cities across the country.”

The Town2Turf scheme will include the roundabout at the junction of Yorkshire Street and Church Street being replaced by a traffic light junction with pedestrian crossings, the subway under Centenary Way being closed and

the area landscaped, changes to the road system around the bus station, new pedestrian crossings, and improved paving, seating, and lighting.

Work has also been carried out to clear vegetation around the historic aqueduct carrying the Leeds and Liverpool Canal over Yorkshire Street which will be refurbished.
