Pendle headteachers retire

Four members of staff at three Nelson primary schools – including two head teachers – have retired after notching up almost 100 years of service between them.

And a headteacher from Barnoldswick has also moved on after seven years in the role.

At St Paul’s CE Primary School, headteacher Mrs Barbara Dewar has stood down after 13 years in the post.

Also at St Paul’s, nursery nurse Mrs Maureen Morrissey has retired after 40 years of service.

A party for staff past and present was held at school and a farewell assembly was held where they were both thanked by governors, staff and pupils for all their hard work and dedication to the school.

Mrs Dewar is looking forward to spending more time with her family, especially her two young granddaughters and Mrs Morrissey is set to do some serious travelling to far flung destinations.

At Walverden Primary School, headteacher Margaret Thacker has retired after 17-and-a-half years in charge – half of her teaching career.

Staff held a special assembly and a celebration buffet for her this week.

She said: “I know I am going to really miss the children and colleagues at Walverden Primary School but I’m hoping to be involved with local schools and community organisations as a volunteer after I retire.”

And at St Philip’s CE Primary School, Mrs Carol Hales has retired from her position as a welfare assistant after 25 years. She was presented with a card and flowers. Mrs Hales is not severing her links with the school completely, however – she will continue her position as a teaching assistant after the summer holidays.

In Barnoldswick, headteacher at Coates Lane Primary School, Graeme Lucas, is leaving the position to move into a School Advisor role for Lancashire County Council.

Mr Lucas said: “I’ve had a wonderful seven years at Coates Lane and the community has given me incredible support over the years.

“I am really sad to be going, but am also excited by the new challenges that lie ahead for me.”
