He is currently the president of British Cycling and, during his 16 years in that role, cycling in this country has gone higher and higher at international level.

Mr Cookson (61) lives in the Ribble Valley and retired from his key job in Pendle – Executive Director (Regeneration) – earlier this year.

In the Daily Express this week it was reported he is planning to restore cycling’s credibility.

He also pledged to make a “fully independent investigation” into allegations of corruption in the International Cycling Union.

He is also looking at the possibility of becoming world leader of the organisation.

The great impact he has had on encouraging cycling in both Pendle and Britain may mean he has a great chance of becoming an international leader in one of the world’s biggest sports.
